The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins is a dystopian-set book series with movies. The trilogy includes three books following protagonist Katniss Everdeen, The Hunger Games (2008), Catching Fire (2009), and Mockingjay (2010). In the books (and movies!), Katniss Everdeen volunteers to take her sister, Primrose Everdeen (Prim)'s place in a deadly battle known as the Hunger Games. In the Hunger Games, twelve districts, strictly ruled by the government (Capitol) are forced to send one boy and one girl (known as tributes), between the ages of twelve to eighteen, to fight to death (Only one tribute is supposed to win). The tributes are reaped from a glass ball at a ceremony known as the Reaping. Prim was originally reaped alongside male tribute Peeta, who is later Katniss' fiancee and husband. The two are assigned to a drunk mentor for the games. In the arena, Katniss and Peeta are separated until there are only a handful of tributes left. Remember though, only one tribute is allowed to win. Katniss however, threatens to eat poisonous berries (so does Peeta, let's give him some credit) and the Capitol let both Katniss and Peeta win. But wait, the Capitol isn't forgiving. Katniss starts a uprising against the Capitol, and the Capitol rewards both Katniss and Peeta with another trip to the arena. But the supposed to be dead district (District 13) fetches her out before to much harm is done, but Peeta is in the Capitol's arms. He gets tortured, and Katniss is forced to yell defiant lines at the camera day and night. Eventually, Katniss and Peeta get reunited.
Alongside the trilogy, there are two Hunger Games prequels. Ballad of the Songbirds and Snakes (2020) and Sunrise on the Reaping (2025). Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes is about how the president of the Capitol rises into power, and Sunrise on the Reaping is drunk mentor Haymitch Abernathy's backstory.
The set of books and movies are amazing for those who love action, constant suspense, and strong protagonists.
